The Charity Bank

Introduction

  • Local charities that commercial lenders can’t help are supported
  • Community enterprises are helped to become self-sufficient

Summary

A branch of a unique bank that supports social enterprise opened in Yorkshire after a £10 million investment by Yorkshire Forward.

Charity Bank is a national organisation that aims to support business growth in the third sector. The investment in a local branch was the first of its kind by a regional development agency.

The project is intended to improve local community enterprise by providing access to financial loans and helping third sector companies become self-sufficient. Malcolm Hayday, chief executive of Charity Bank said: “We welcome the innovative lead that Yorkshire Forward has taken to open up access to finance for third sector organisations throughout the region.”

Charity Bank is unique in its position as a registered general charity and an authorised bank. It was launched five years ago to create a sustainable source of loan funds for charities and social enterprises that commercial lenders can’t or won’t provide.
